The lady is wearing a black jacket as an outerwear

When it comes to winter coats, style is often overlooked for warmth. Sure, we want a garment that keeps us warm but that doesn’t mean we need to sacrifice style in order to keep old man winter at bay! Today, we’re sharing our top outerwear pieces for the fall/winter and how to layer them with your favorite closet staples and keep the style quotient on-par!

Tips for layering like a pro

When the temperature starts to drop, layering is key to keeping you feeling warm and looking chic. Although the concept of layering is pretty simple, there are some key tips to layering like a pro this season.

Start with the thinnest layer

When you’re getting dressed in the morning, try to wear your most fitted garment first and then layer on anything heavier. This will not only make it easier to add other pieces on top, but it will also allow you to remove layers, if need be, once indoors. With that being said, you still want to make sure that your outfit can work without your top layers if you do decide to remove some pieces!

Lessen the bulk

While layering garments is key to staying warm, we still want to avoid looking bulky and puffy. To do this, try to stick to only one chunky piece like a thick sweater, heavy jacket, or knitted scarf. This will ensure your look is flattering and sleek.

Color is crucial

Layering is all about playing with different proportions and fabrics without looking messy. This can be easily achieved by ensuring that the color of your pieces seamlessly flow together. Try keeping it to one- or two-color families and if you’re going to wear a print, make sure the color of your other garments complement that pattern.

Don’t forget the accessories

Think of your accessories as another layer to your look. Necklaces, bangles, belts, hats, and scarves can all be used to complete and perfect your look without having to add excess bulk. Even tall boots like the Mezzamezza City Boot by Stuart Weizman can be layered with long dresses or skirts for a warm yet chic look even during the coldest of days.

Layered outfit ideas

Now that you’ve mastered the art of how to layer, let’s dive into a few of our favorite layered looks for the fall and winter seasons!

Heading into the office? We’ve got the perfect look for you! Start with a classic white button-up top like our Twice As Nice Shirt. A white button-up shirt is the perfect first layer for any look because it goes with almost anything and will look great if you decide to remove any of your outer layers once you get to your destination! The Twice As Nice Shirt is a step up from your average button-up because of the unique double-layer design. It’s made from a high-quality stretch poplin that pairs effortlessly with any of our jackets or vests such as our cool weather favorite Take Note Vest! This one-of-a-kind vest features an oversized hood that transforms to a dramatic, modern collar when worn down. It’s super easy to throw on over any outfit of your choosing and flatters many different body types! When rocking a long jacket or vest, it’s best to pair it with slim-fitting pants to flatter your body. Our Slimming Ankle Pants are the ultimate staple. They look like your typical trousers but feel like you’re wearing leggings. What’s not to love? These best-selling pants feature slimming style lines to fit and flatter most body shapes and sizes and look great paired with sweatersjacketstunics, and more!

To finish off the look, we love adding a chic yet functional bag like the Cole Haan Grand Ambition Backpack. This bag is stylish, sturdy, and can hold all of your essentials! The choice of monochromatic colors and fabrics are the perfect finishing touch to any layered look!

This next outfit is the perfect combination of comfort and style and it’s not hard to see why! Our new Downtown Shirt is a unique and modern take on a classic cotton-poplin top. The zipper design on the front, sleeves, and back of the shirt give this style an edgy flare, making it the perfect layering garment. It’s also wrinkle-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about it wrinkling when layering jackets on top! To keep in line with the edgy look, we love pairing the Downtown Shirt with our Favorite Jacket as the outer layering garment. This versatile outerwear piece features moto-inspired details along with flattering seams and front pockets. It’s the perfect transition piece to take you into fall! Finishing off this look with a pair of comfy yet sleek bottoms is a must! Our customer-favorite Tencel® Love the Look Leggings are the perfect addition to any wardrobe because of their flattering simplicity. These aren’t your typical leggings! The smooth lines and curves hug and flatter your body without sacrificing comfort. They’re made from a sustainable Tencel® blend and have a hidden elastic waistband to keep you feeling comfy all day long!

Talk about the ultimate autumn outfit! Our new Modern Mix Sweater looks amazing worn under our Reversible Step Up Cardigan. The gray and ivory color blocking is the perfect way to incorporate different colors into your layered outfit without looking messy. Both the Modern Mix Sweater and Reversible Step Up Cardigan are made with a cotton and cashmere blend for the ultimate comfort during those cooler days. When worn with our Slimming Ankle Pants, you’ll never want to take this comfortable and stylish look off (and we don’t blame you!) What’s an autumn outfit without an ankle bootie? To finish off this look, we recommend rocking a leather ankle boot like the Kenneth Cole Salt Heeled Chelsea Boot! Leather ankle boots are versatile, durable, and can be worn throughout the fall and winter seasons.

The pièce de resistance! Embrace winter in style with our Definitive Coat. Stylish details flourish on this elegant last layer. For starters, the covered front placket zips up to a stylish high collar that keeps warm and cozy while retaining your fashion decorum. Front-princess lines with deep tucks add interest and resolve into convenient front pockets, and the lightly padded lining strikes the perfect balance between fashion and utility without compromising comfort. Pair it with our vegan suede Look Sharp Leggings and a pair of fabulous boots like the Justin Lug Boot from Kenneth Cole, they’re sturdy and stylish and everything we love in a winter boot.
