The clothing we put on our bodies is so much more than just looks. Our personal style and sense of fashion make us feel good and confident in our own skin, no matter what our body shape or size. Gone are the days when all models looked the exact same because now the world is finally ready to embrace women as we really are—diverse in all body types, shapes, colors, and sizes! And while women come in all shapes and sizes, that doesn’t mean that we all can’t embrace the confidence of our personal style to flatter our individual shapes. Read on to learn tips for dressing your personal body type and to learn more about our best-selling top that flatters all body shapes, the Tiburon Tunic Icon.

Tips for dressing your body type

Before diving into how to dress each body type, it’s important to first figure out what your body type is! While there are many different body types, let’s start by focusing on the four main body shapes. Most likely, you will be able to figure out which one best describes you:

  • If your waist is wider than your bust, your shoulders are narrow, and your bottom is fuller, you have a pear body type. This body type is described as “bottom-heavy” because your waist, legs, and behind are typically wider and fuller when compared to the rest of your body.
  • If you have slimmer arms and legs but a bigger bust and midsection, you have an apple body type. This is the opposite of a pear body type as it is considered “top-heavy.”
  • The hourglass body type is one of the most talked-about shapes because this shape boasts a slim waist with a curvier bust and bottom.
  • The last body type is referred to as rectangular, athletic, or straight and it can be defined as having little waist definition, a wider chest, and even weight distribution throughout your entire body.

Now that you’re able to figure out your body type, let’s talk about how to dress and flatter each of these body shapes. The first thing to note (and the most important) is to always wear what you want and feel confident in. While there are tips to flattering each type of figure, fashion should be fun and not confined by rules. At the end of the day, this is your wardrobe and your body, so wear what you like and are most comfortable in!

When dressing a pear-shaped body, the focus should be on elongating your figure. This means it’s all about the necklines and flattering pants. A plunging V-neck, scoop necks, and cowl necks are all flattering tops on this body shape because it brings attention to your top half and diverts attention from your hips. Bright colors and fun patterns are also recommended to keep the eyes on your upper body. Because the focus for pear body types is all on the upper half, it’s typically a good idea to stick to darker colored bottomsStraight leg and boot cut pants are always flattering on pear-shaped bodies to help balance your proportions.

If you have an apple-shaped body, the focus is going to be taking attention away from your midsection and putting it on your full bust and slim legs/arms. Looser, flowy tops with a slight V-neck and embellishment are a great option for this body type. A-line silhouettes, flowy tunics relaxed boyfriend button-ups, and asymmetrical tops all work well for this body type. Like pear-shapes, straight-leg or looser fitting bottoms look best on apple body types because it helps to balance out wide shoulders. Focus on accentuating your lower half with a pair of dazzling heels and avoid belts that draw attention to your waist.

For hourglass body types, you want to both define your waist and accentuate your shape. Hourglass shapes are all about fitted silhouettes to show off those curves! Form-fitting tops with V-necks or round necks are always a great option but try staying away from boxy silhouettes as they can hide those gorgeous curves. A cinched waist or belted top are also great options for the hourglass shape. Leggings or straight-leg pants are great options to show off the waist and legs.

Lastly, when dressing rectangular-shaped bodies, the focus should be on defining the waist by breaking up the rectangle to create a more curvy silhouette. A sleeveless flowy top like our Illusion Tunic creates a drape rather than clinging to the midsection. Sleeves with embellishment, ¾, rolled-up or cuffed help draw attention away from the body. Add dimension to your frame with a nipped or shaped waist like on our best-selling Tiburon Tunic. To create even more shape and needed curves and volume to the lower part of your body try belting it! The right pair of trousers, a flared or wide-leg cropped pant or bootcut trouser are more great ways to add volume to the lower half of the body as well.
