Since fast fashion and social media trends have taken over the world of fashion, it can sometimes be difficult to figure out what to fill our closets with—especially as we mature. If you’re having a hard time finding a wardrobe that works for you after 40, we’ve got you covered! Today, we’re sharing our top tips on how to dress after 40 and still look timeless and stylish!
Before we get into our tips on how to dress after 40 and look effortlessly chic, it’s important to note that your wardrobe is a total reflection of you. This means that if you want to wear a certain clothing item or play into a certain trend, go for it! Our age does not define us and even as we get older, that doesn’t mean that we have to sacrifice our personal style or taste just because we’re no longer 20. Fashion is meant to be fun and expressive—always remember that.
Now that we’ve gotten that important disclaimer out of the way, let’s get into some of our top tips on how to dress after 40.
Although fast fashion stores are hip to shop for trendy, in-season items, it’s best to avoid shopping from those types of stores for several reasons. Clothing from fast fashion stores isn’t made to last. So, while you may be getting a good deal on a trendy dress, it won’t last you past one season (plus, it probably won’t be in style for very long!) Also, fast fashion companies are not eco-friendly for our environment and often violate labor laws to manufacture their garments. At Stella Carakasi, we’re all about quality over quantity and always choose to work with eco-friendly fabrics and certified manufacturers to make our clothing in the best way possible. One of our most important values is aiming to make a difference across all aspect of our work including how women feel wearing Stella Carakasi.
No one likes to buy a brand-new wardrobe every single time the weather changes. Try incorporating quality staple items into your closet to not only save you money but make dressing in the mornings a little easier! Some staple items to consider are a pair of jeans, leggings, cardigans, denim tops, button-up tunics, and t-shirts. Try grabbing these staples in neutral colors like white, black, and navy to match with anything and also add the occasional pop color, to refresh everything you already own!
While rocking a matching suit or two-piece outfit may work for many occasions, try mixing and matching stylesto create perfectly chic outfits. We love pairinga beautiful knit top, or a classic white shirt with a pair of stylish leggings or comfortable dress pants to create the perfect, yet put together look! For a date-ready look, wear a loose flowing dress and always have a versatile cardigan on hand to stay cozy and chic.
When building out your wardrobe, it’s important to take your own personal tastes and styles into account. When you like what you’re wearing and you feel comfortable in your outfit, you will feel good from the inside too! Fashion is all about expressing yourself and making you feel happy with the way you look. Don’t forgo this for trends that will only last a season.
Let’s get out of the mindset that casual equals “sloppy” or not put together. Having a wardrobe that you can run errands or see a movie in is just as important as your business or fancy attire! Here at Stella Carakasi, we offer many styles that are comfortable and casual yet still put together for any grocery trip or casual date night!
Miniskirts, midi dress, maxi dress, oh my! Different skirt and dress lengths are always going in and out of style but what’s more important is to find the right length for you. Dresses and skirts that sit right above or below the knee are usually the way to go because this length is seasonless and by far the most flattering on most women.
As we age, it’s normal for our personal style and tastes to change—and that’s totally okay! What we once liked 5 years ago may not flatter us now or just simply may not appeal to us anymore. Because our fashion sense is a reflection of ourselves and our lifestyle, it’s fine to take risks, change up our styles, and even have more than one look or style! Don’t forget—your wardrobe is no one else’s but yours, so make sure you feel good it in and don’t worry about others.
Who says fashion just means the clothes that you wear on your body? We love experimenting with fun, different ways to play with makeup to complement our facial features and the outfit we’re wearing that day!
One of our favorites lines of makeup is BOOM by makeup artist, Cindy Joseph. It’s the first age-inclusive makeup line to work for women of all ages. We especially love their Boomsticks that enhance our natural features and bring our entire look together because not only are they super easy to use but they also fit into our philosophy of less is more, when less is better. You really don’t need a lot of make-up components in order to achieve a fresh and beautiful look and the same applies to clothing. You don’t need a lot of clothing to always look put together because if the right styles mix and match well together, it makes getting dressed easy without sacrificing comfort or style.
